Dean’s Statement
The Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry (originally known as Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry) was one of the four original departments (others include Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology) which formed the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka when the then Department of Pharmacy was elevated to the status of a Faculty in 1980. The details of the history of the Faculty can be found here.
The Department is quite dependent on the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the undergraduate level in terms of admission, lectures and graduation requirements as detailed in the faculty guidelines.
However, the Department has its distinct admission requirements, courses and graduation requirements at the postgraduate level. The Department runs both Masters (M.Pharm and MSc) and PhD at the postgraduate level. It has graduated several notable alumni. Many of the academic staff are products of the Department.
